June 26, 2010 - Phase 1 Deworming and Vitamin A Supplementation - Payatas headed by Dr. Luis T. Chan, Jr.

Worm infections and Vitamin A deficiencies both have serious health repercussions for a growing child and therefore both should be prioritized. It is one of the simplest and most cost effective interventions for improving a child's health.  Dr. Chan and our team volunteers was able to share these information and preventative measures to the parents and children in Payatas. Our target children are in the stages of intense physical and mental development and will affect their overall growth and especially their cognitive performance if not treated immediately. These are one of the many investments we wanted to accomplish to have a long-term impact in the lives of these children that coincides with providing them education or incentive to learn. So worm free children will grow faster and learn better.  We also conducted education awareness on how to prevent worms, food and water borne diseases, safe drinking water and proper sanitation. 195 children benefited from our health program and 200 families were given water purifying tablets (AQUATABS) that would ensure safe drinking water for all family members to last for at least 2 months.
June 2, 2010 - 200 Elementary School Children Received Their School Supplies - Immaculate Conception Church, Tondo

Our volunteers gave them lots of attention and care and that's all they needed more than anything else. Our ongoing corporate donor, DEL MONTE PHILIPPINES and DEL MONTE USA  has donated assorted fruit juices for all these children as well.

July 10, 2010 - Phase 2 Deworming and Vitamin A Supplementation - Payatas headed by Dr. Luis T. Chan, Jr.
Healthy Children, healthy futures promotes children's healthy growth and development through this health program by treating children for intestinal parasitic infection and nutritional deficiencies
Exactly 10 years ago this day, an unusual tragedy occurred in the Philippines that shocked the whole world.  Due to the nonstop heavy rains for several days, a mountain of garbage collapsed burying hundreds of people that resulted to the death of at least 300 people – men, women with children included. This bizarre tragedy left at least 300 families homeless. That mountain of garbage still remains to this day - the Payatas dumpsite – which provides the main source of livelihood for hundreds of families through scavenging of any waste material, i.e. metal, tires, plastic, cardboard, paper, wood, glass, and other items that can be sold to recycling agents.
Today, our heath outreach program served 240 children for deworming, Vitamin A supplementation and distribution of water purifying tablets to 155 families. Health education was also conducted for these families on prevention of water and  food borne diseases, water sanitation, Dengue prevention and proper hand washing technique. Teaching children about good nutrition, preventive health habits, and hygiene and sanitation measures that help prevent disease. Also there were about 10 adults whom we dewormed, the oldest was a lola.

These school supplies were distributed just in time for school opening in June.  Thank you to our generous donors for putting together these shoe boxes of hope.  You gave these children the biggest smiles and incentive to learn.
July 12, 2010 - Grant and Collaboration with De La Salle Book Mobile and Reading Program
Grants given to De La Salle BookMobile Reading Program to benefit the province of Batangas to work hand in hand to extend help to the poor and provide access to books. Portions of grant was used for audio visual equipment for purposes of film showing/viewing to the children to supplement the reading programs;  supplies for audio visual equipment; and big story books as this fascinate the children very much which is very helpful during story telling activities.  Thanks to the generosity of heart and spirit of our donors and of the people who work hard to make us achieve our goals. Reaching a hand to needy children to get a chance at life through your gift of education will always continue through your generous support. The Foundation will continue supporting this program with De La Salle on a continuing basis.  Below is a message to Arnel Pineda Foundation on April 12, 2010:

"Indeed, we are very grateful for your very generous gift for the education of the poor. It comes at a time when we are looking for more funding for materials to continue the good work. Partly subsidized by the school in its priority for educational reach out, the Bookmobile and Reading Program rests on the shoulders of generous men and women who believe in direct action for the poor, and improving their plight, by increasing their chances through education. Please thank the community that you work with again, in our behalf, and in behalf of the children -- both in the public schools and in our night school that will benefit from your compassion and kindness of heart."

Respectfully,
Br. Mawel Pajarillo FSC

We also provided APF school backpacks and through partnership, feeding twice a week  and will soon be shipping feeding bowls and slippers and other basic supplies for 500 elementary aetas.

July 20, 2010 - The Arnel Pineda Foundation's First Pre-School Learning Center Opens!
Thank you to all our donors who again, made a significant difference in the lives of 25 Filipino families living at subsistence levels of poverty.  Through partnership with ICM, we were able to provide education to 25 at-risk children from a poor community in Negros to receive a 10-month, 5-day-per-week education program designed to prepare them for public school.   Our learning center has one full-time teacher, Mrs. Nida Taan, and one full-time teacher’s assistant, Ms. Jinky Cadusale provided by ICM and were also been trained in the instruction of the curriculum. As most students would be lucky to eat only once a day at home, a nutritious cooked school lunch is provided to aid the children’s concentration and well-being. The school teacher will plan a daily menu to provide a balanced diet. Most of the food donated were arranged by Mike Whitehead through Kids Against Hunger.  Their school uniforms, supplies, stationery, and classroom desks, etc. were also provided, including their surprise "Shoe Boxes of Hope" that we all put together last Spring.  Aside from education, meals and supplies, our pre-school children also receive medical checks including de-worming, immunization checks, height/weight monitoring, dental hygiene lessons and personal hygiene instruction.   Parents of these preschoolers were also trained to participate in values, health and livelihood.  These classes meet once a week on weekends throughout the entire school year.  Parents learn about the importance of strong values for personal growth.  The UN approved curriculum in health care covers such topics as disease recognition and prevention, nutrition, childhood development and child care, hygiene and basic first aid.  The livelihood training is a hands-on course where they get trained and helped to produce organic soil and grow personal vegetable gardens (for personal use and resale for income). We will continue to open pre-schools each year in the remote areas of provinces where basic education is not available for these children.
November 12, 2010 - APF Health and Development Program: Deworming and Vitamin A Supplementation Successfully Completed in 2010 - 2,842 total children and 1,497 families served from five phases
Payatas and San Juan Health Outreach Programs (Phase 5) – Thank you Dr. Luis Chan, Ma. Socorro Manahan, Manuel P. Manahan Foundation, the Silverback Riders and Councilor Marie O’Neal Mendoza for extending health outreach to 1,047 elementary school children in San Juan.  Held on November 12, 2010, headed by Dr. Luis Chan and Councilor O’Neal Mendoza, it was another successful deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program that served thousands of elementary school students from the surrounding communities of San Juan.
Most of these children are at risk of infection with soil-transmitted helminths, or STH: roundworms, whipworms and hookworms.  Found mostly in these areas served, STH is caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation. Intestinal worms are especially harmful to children because they lead to malnutrition, anemia, stunted growth, impaired cognitive development and poor school attendance and performance.  Dr. Chan and his team who understands the rationale for deworming and how to properly dispense doses for certain age groups in the most efficient and cost-effective deliveries will help these children improve their learning skills, promote child development, improve their overall health and enhance education.  Combined with Vitamin A supplementation and health education awareness program for families on topics of proper sanitation and  prevention of food and water borne diseases, this program is a great investment to the overall health of these children.
We are grateful for all the the donors, the commitment of our 87 volunteers and those who gave their time to all five phases of health outreach programs held from June 26 – November 12, 2010. Thank you on behalf of all the children and families you served and all our donors for their continuing support to help those in need.

Christmas is a season filled with joy for the preschool students of Arnel Pineda Foundation Learning Center. Aside from the Christmas party sponsored by International Care Ministries Phils, our preschool also had a Christmas party where all of the parents and students were invited. The students gave a song number on this special occasion and surprised each student with their gifts from you, our donors. Mrs. Jocelyn Himpayan, mother of student Jonalyn Delasas said that it is the nicest toy her child has ever owned. In fact this is the only real toy she’s ever really owned because her family cannot afford to buy toys. Jonalyn is a six year old student. Her father is unemployed and her mother is a laundrywoman who earns 1,500 pesos a month. They live in a small shack with her grandmother. They have no toilet and no electricity. Jonalyn loves her stuffed animal so much and wouldn’t let go of it. Her mother said that Jonalyn went to bed with her toy and fell asleep hugging it.
